2010 Games No Snow on Cypress Mountain

I work in North Vancouver and get information daily about the mountain where some 2010 Olympic events are supposed to take place. They have big bare patches of grass and dirt on the runs. I will be updating this blog as things progress so you will get to find out what they will be doing in desperation to fix the runs. I gotta see this myself! Apparently they do have some snow making machines but how are you going to make snow when the temperature is way above 32 degrees Fahrenheit? Vancouver was approved for these Olympics way back in 2000 but how were they to know that this January in Vancouver was the warmest in recorded history for Vancouver! It broke all records. Go figure. Murphy's law or what!

The local joke here in my favorite restaurant in North Van is that they are going to put hay down the slopes! I do not think that is going to happen but they are sweating bullets right now for sure and no one seems to be saying a thing about it. The blurb on the cypressmountain.com website is as follows: Preparation of the courses is proceeding well with snow being trucked and placed from other areas of Cypress Mountain. In addition VANOC is transporting snow from other areas of the Lower Mainland to stockpile and supplement the on-mountain supply.

The other areas of the Lower Mainland they are talking about is more than 100 miles away in Manning Park.  So imagine that.  Trying to truck in snow from over 100 miles away to fill a mountainside!!  Well the good news is that today February 2, we finally had snow after a month of no snow.  I hope it lasts but the local flower and trees that are trying to bloom right now are saying no.  And what really makes me made is that I bought $500 worth of new snow tires that were only useful for about 2 days in December.  It better snow!

By the way, this does not apply to the events at Whistler mountain which seems to have enough snow.

If you are still planning on coming to the events but have not planned ahead there are still plenty of accommodations available.  See my other blog about accommodations.

I just stumbled upon a way to get a $100 per click ad on Google for free!   Very interesting twist.  It is not illegal and Google even approves of it.
